Montessori
developed six essential components to the Montessori environment. The first
component is freedom of choice for the children. How Sunshine Montessori School
would implement the freedom of choice into the class is by letting the children
choose their own activity rather than me forcing them to do certain activities
of teacher’s choice because with this action, it gives the child a sense of
fulfillment and let them reflect upon their own action and determine their
consequences.
The
second component is that the Montessori environment should be structured and
ordered. A child will know where to find the work and where to return it when
he or she is done with it. We will implement this principle by categorizing
these works with color trays inside a child-sized shelf. Through order, the
children will figure out a way to trust the environment and learn to interact
with it in a positive way. Next, the Montessori classroom has its reality and
nature. To implement this method into our center, the material in the classroom
will not be excessive instead; it should be at its minimal. This teaches the
children to take turns on sharing the same material.
Besides
that, our classroom will consist of some plants or some small animals for the
children to take care of and through this method, the children will learn to
develop self-discipline and security where he needs to explore his external and
internal world. A Montessori classroom should consist beauty in its atmosphere.
We would implement this method with a change of the classroom’s wall into a
cooler color to enhance the children’s patience and their positivity. We would
also put up a notice board for the children to paste their work as this method
increases their confidence. This notice board has to be placed at the
children’s eye level.
Other
than that, an example of the beauty in its atmosphere is on the game Jenga.
Jenga is a wooden block game that is taken out from the base and placed on the
top competing on the stability of your hands. If this game is placed into a
classroom of the Montessori, it should not be made of plastic materials,
instead it should be made by wood. This is to let the children feel like the
classroom like a home-like environment.
The
following component is the development of community life. Sunshine Montessori
School has different ages of children in the same classroom because this could
let the younger children be inspired by the elder children in the classroom.
Last but not least is the authenticity of the Montessori materials. We would
implement this component by showing that teacher should do individual
presentation to the child and not just let the child play with the materials.
